About the guided tour
This guided tour provides fascinating insights into the eventful past of the Main Building, from the era of Viennese modernism and the period of National Socialism to the present, in which the Main Building is a vibrant centre of research, teaching and studies. Highlights of the tour include the leafy Arcaded Courtyard, the representative ceremonial hall area (if available) featuring reproductions of Gustav Klimt’s ceiling paintings as well as numerous monuments of historical personalities.
Historical background: The Main Building of the University of Vienna on Ringstrasse boulevard was designed by Heinrich von Ferstel and was opened in 1884. The monumental building today houses the university library, numerous faculties, course rooms and administrative units. It is the heart of the largest university in the German-speaking area and has always been an important place for the exchange of information and ideas between academia and society. The University of Vienna offers guided tours of the Main Building for school children aged 14 years or older. The tour is a popular item on the programme of school trips to Vienna, allowing pupils to explore the Main Building of the oldest university in the German-speaking area. The guided tour takes around 1 hour and covers the aula as well as the Main Ceremonial Hall (if available). In the Arcaded Courtyard, the school students have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of famous Austrian academics. In addition, you can also book an information lecture by the Teaching Affairs and Student Services unit on the topic of studying at the University of Vienna. Learn more
