Aula

When you enter the Main Building through the main entrance, you find yourself in the columned hall of the Aula. Via the left-hand and right-hand atria you reach the two wings of the Main Building of the University as well as the Arcaded Courtyard. The marble Rector’s plaque in the left-hand atriumniche lists the names of all rectors since the founding of the University of Vienna in 1365, engraved in the plaque. Next to it, the art installation "Nobelpreis und Universität Wien – Gruppenbild mit Fragezeichen” (the Nobel prize and the University of Vienna – a group picture with question marks) shows the portraits of the nine Nobel Prize laureates from the University of Vienna on glass steles on different levels. The question mark in the centre of the installation reminds us of all academics who had to flee during the Nazi era. On the opposite side of the Aula, you can find the porter’s lodge as well as a location map of the Main Building.
