Guided tours on the history of homosexuality at the University of Vienna
The academic discourse on homosexuality at the University of Vienna emerged in the 19th century, while for a long time research focused exclusively on male homosexuality. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that women were admitted to the University of Vienna. However, regarding the discourse on homosexuality little changed until the 1980s: Theories of male homosexuality were applied to female homosexuality by way of analogy. Does queer theory allow us to explore new academic frontiers? Historically speaking, Law, Medicine, its particular branch Sexology and Psychology were the central areas of research concerned with homosexuality.
Nowadays, cultural studies are in the forefront of promoting and applying queer theories.
